14th December 2011 - The Mediaeval Baebes at Launceston
On Wednesday 14th December, the Mediaeval Baebes made their first visit to Launceston with a candle-lit concert at St Cuthbert Mayne Catholic Church.
The Baebes are a professional group of seven female singers specialising in songs and adaptations from mediaeval times, ranging from popular love songs to Latin anthems such as Ave Maria (Hail Mary). They perform in many venues, including cathedrals, castles and concert halls, both in Britain and abroad. Several of the girls accompanied the singing on mediaeval-style instruments and some of the songs were a cappella (unaccompanied). Their voices are stunningly beautiful.

The very appreciative audience of 100, who asked for and got an encore, sat in a church lit entirely by candles except for the side chapels and crucifix above the altar which were highlighted. The Baebes have a devoted following. Many of our visitors came from far afield to see them.

There was an interval when mince pies and mulled wine were served in the Charles Langdon Room (the church hall), and after the concert many people bought CDs, Tee-shirts and posters. Donations were invited for the Launceston Food Bank and £100 was raised.
The Baebes are keen to return to Launceston next year. They were very impressed with the acoustics of the church, the beauty of the setting and the enthusiastic welcome they received. In fact they described the evening as “one of our top ten magical gigs”.
